Abstract

The paper gives a general description of OceanVar, a three-dimensional variational data assimilation scheme developed for oceanographic applications. It has been developed by applying several novel mathematical solutions specially designed for operational oceanographic applications, in which the information coming from a large number of observations, mainly from satellite sensors, is combined with forecasted state estimates in near-real time. Due to the capability to assimilate a large number of satellite observations OceanVar appears more accurate than a similar data assimilation scheme based on the Kalman filter like approach.
